Shelter and warmth in the first 72 hours
Choose the safest available structure before trying to improve comfort. Move away from unstable walls, downed lines, floodwater, smoke, and obvious gas leaks. If the location is unsafe, leave when officials or conditions direct you to.
Reduce heat loss
- Stay dry. Replace wet clothing if you can.
- Add insulating layers between your body and cold ground.
- Use clean, dry layers around the head, hands, and feet.
- Share a smaller protected space only when it remains safe and ventilated.
Indoor safety
Never use fuel-burning equipment, grills, or generators indoors or in an enclosed shelter. Carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled. Keep exits clear and use battery light instead of open flame when possible.
Night plan
Decide where everyone sleeps, where shoes and a light are kept, and how people will leave if conditions change. Check on children, older adults, and people who need medical equipment.
