First aid in the first 72 hours

Protect yourself first. Check that the scene is safe before approaching. Call emergency services when possible for trouble breathing, severe bleeding, chest pain, stroke signs, poisoning, loss of consciousness, serious burns, or suspected spinal injury.

Immediate priorities

  1. Get help and state the location, hazard, and number of people affected.
  2. Control severe external bleeding with firm direct pressure using clean material. Do not remove a dressing that has soaked through; add another layer.
  3. Keep the person warm, still, and observed while waiting for trained help.
  4. Use medicines only as directed on their labels or by a qualified clinician.

Basic kit

Keep gloves, clean dressings, tape, a thermometer, regular prescriptions, written medical information, and a way to communicate. Avoid giving food or drink to a person who is unconscious, confused, or having trouble swallowing.
