Navigation in the first 72 hours

Before moving, decide whether moving is safer than staying. Know your destination, route, alternate route, meeting point, and check-in time. Avoid floodwater, damaged bridges, downed lines, and restricted areas.

Carry a simple route note

• Starting point and destination
• Two recognizable landmarks
• Expected travel time
• People travelling and their needs
• Return or check-in time

Use more than one reference

A paper map, a written address, landmarks, and a charged device can reinforce one another. Do not rely on a phone map alone. Mark safe places, fuel or water points, and hazards only when the information is current and verified.

If separated

Follow the group’s pre-agreed meeting point and check-in plan. Do not send someone into a hazard zone to search without trained help.
